Flip A Coin

​I can’t tell you how often people ask me if I think they’re making the right decision about their personal lives during our coaching sessions. Of course, it’s not my job to tell them. But they still ask me about big and small things. 

My client: “Do you think I’m making a mistake, that I’m going to ruin my life because of what I’m planning to do? Do you think I’m crazy?”

Me: “I know that you have all the wisdom you need to make the right decision. Maybe it’s not obvious to you, but in your heart of hearts, you know what you want. And for that reason, I think you should flip a coin and decide.”

Heads or tails. 

Sounds strange, but I tell them to take out a simple coin and flip it. It’s some of the best advice I ever give. 

Why would I tell my clients to flip a coin about things like opening their marriages or getting divorced?

Because when you decide to flip a coin, there’s a moment when the coin is in the air that you immediately know exactly what you want.

You want Heads! Heads! Heads!

Or Tails! Tails! Tails! 

You get an overpowering moment of realization during the first fatal seconds of spin.

Because you feel it in your body/heart/gut. You know what you want in your deepest self.

Of course, you might want to also think about practical things that influence your decision, but when you toss a coin and know what you really want, you’ll make a decision that includes your real feelings.
